The FBmn Software's Exposure plug-in lets you:

  • Control the overall exposure of your clips, from -3 to +3 IL
  • Save under-exposed areas (or shadows) by bringing them more light
  • Restore over-exposed areas by lighting them down

Moreoever, the GPU version provides GPU acceleration for more fluid preview and faster rendering. It also brings advanced color control and enhanced highlights correction.

The plugin brings to you the control of up to 4 parameters as follows:

  1. the Exposure slider acts as the exposure compensation of a camera, except that you change it in post-production. In the original clip 1 ahead, the camera has been misled in exposition computing, resulting in a highly underexposed image. Setting the FBmn exposure slider to +3 mostly fixes the problem.
  2. the Shadow slider works on low-key areas, i.e. the ones with the weakest lighting values. Depending on the intensity you choose between 0% and 100%, these areas will be illuminated more or less intensively. In clip 2 ahead, the overall exposure has been changed very lightly because there are both over- and under- exposed subjects. The shadow parameter has been set to 64%, in order to unmask the details of the trees in the lower half of the clip.
  3. the Highlight slider acts on the high-key areas, i.e. the ones having the highest lighting values. This control is generally useful to save the details in over-exposed areas, especially once the exposition has been increased with the Exposure slider. Here, in both clips the highlights have been set to 100% to keep details as much as possible in the candles and in the sky.
In the Exposure plug-in, this value ranges from 0 to 100%. It ranges from 0 to 200% in the Exposure GPU plug-in.
  4. With the GPU version of the Exposure plug-in, you additionally have a Saturation slider which provides you with advanced color control. Even with poor lighting conditions, this lets you save the hue of original colors.

How to use it

The way it works is quite simple:
  • Drag the effect to the clip you want to adjust
  • Open the plug-in property sheet
  • Adjust the overall exposure with the Exposure slider
  • Adjust the darkest areas with the Shadow slider
  • Adjust the brightest areas with the Highlight slider
  • With Exposure GPU, adjust the advanced color control with the Saturation slider
  • For an optimal use, it might help to display the histogram while setting the sliders

« I have just purchased the Exposure and White Balance plugins and they're incredibly efficient. Prior to these plugins, I was adjusting color correction, trying the Sony plugin, etc. The plugins by Frederic are a few clicks and you're back to cutting events. »
